In order to see Hashem in this world, it sometimes requires complete renewal and starting over with nothingness. Avraham Avinu left all he knew and withstood the ten tests, and thereby affirmed Hashem's tangible presence in this world. In this merit, Hashem brought the plagues to Egypt and revealed Himself, the same way Avraham Avinu revealed Hashem through his withstanding the tests. The situation in Egypt had to get worse before it got better so the Jews could start over and truly see Hashem's presence.
