11 - Va'eira - Why Were We In Exile?

The Gemara discusses why Avraham was punished with his children's enslavement in Mitzrayim. However, we do not view our exile in Mitzrayim simply as retribution, but rather as a formative experience that helped to develop us as a more sensitive nation. We understand what it is like to be slaves and a foreigners; therefore, many of our mitzvos call for extra understanding and compassion, especially on the holiday of Pesach.
