Shemini - Not Just Leftovers - 4th Aliyah
by Hauer, Rabbi Moshe
In the 4th
aliyah
of
Parshas Shemini
, Moshe instructs Aharon and his sons to eat the leftovers of the meal offering. The term
nosarim
, leftovers, is used in reference to Aharon's remaining sons, and the remainder of the
korban
. This term refers to something which should not have remained. Although Aharon should have been destroyed because of his involvement in
chet ha'egel
, not only was he spared, but he was chosen to be the Kohen Gadol. Aharon's critical role reflects our ability to do
teshuva
from
ahavah
(love), turning the very act of sin into a positive aspect for our merit.
