The first and second aliyos (portions) in this Parsha speak about the efod (apron) and the choshen (breastplate) that the Kohen Gadol (high priest) used to wear in the temple. Although an apron is a garment usually associated with idol worship outside of the temple, the one in the temple hinted to the commitment to unity of Hashem. The efod (apron) was attached to a breastplate in front, on the heart, which hinted to the unity of the Jewish people. The Torah makes these two garments attached to one another and not separate because both the unity of Hashem and togetherness of the Jewish nation is needed in order to establish Hashem's presence in this world.
