Project Genesis
Can My 'Free Choice' Negatively Affect Your Destiny? (Parshas Vayeshev)
Speaker:   Alter, Rabbi Avrohom M.
Series: Hashkafah -Thought
Lecture Details:  It is a fundamental principle of Judaism that there are no coincidences in life - all events and happenings, personal and national, are orchestrated by/from Hashem. In fact the Talmud teaches "a person does not even stub his toe unless it is so decreed from above." Yet just as fundamental is the principle of "freedom of choice" - Hashem does not control or interfere with the will of any man. He allows individuals to freely choose their actions, even to defy His will! How then are we to understand the paradox of Hashem not restraining Reuven from choosing to sin, for example, by doing harm to Shimon, while on the other hand the Heavenly Court had not decreed Shimon suffer any harm?
