Autumn's Symphony of Color - Priesthood and Perspective (Parshas Toldos)
Speaker:   Alter, Rabbi Avrohom M.
Series: Hashkafah -Thought
Lecture Details:  When all living things reach their lifespan they weaken and shrivel, indicating their loss of vibrancy with age. Yet in the fall when trees exhaust their longevity, just before the trees loose their leaves, instead of wilting and turning brown, they vibrantly burst forth into a gorgeous symphony of eye-catching color! Esav sells his birthright to Yaakov displaying an attitude towards his destined Kahuna that our sages term "spurning" or "disgracing" the birthright. Yet the Talmud teaches that he was very aware of and indeed feared the meticulous constraints of the priesthood - which comes with stringent consequences, perhaps even death. If so, it would seem, he did not in fact disgrace it, to the contrary, he respected it so much, recognizing that he might not be able to maintain its meticulous laws. What does this have to do with autumns gorgeous display of color?
