In Parshas Ki Saitsai we learn of the ben sorair u'moreh, the rebellious 13-year-old, who is put to death for doing no worse than stealing from his parents. The Torah is so convinced the child will only get worse that the only recourse is to put him to death before he gets into further trouble. But don't we all go through difficult adolescences which we eventually outgrow? How can the Torah be so certain there is no hope? This lecture explores the dynamics of a healthy upbringing. |
