There is a difference between ohr—a light, like what was created on the first day of creation, and me’ohr—a luminary, that which generates light, created on the fourth day. The candles of Chanukah are ohr—light, not luminaries. This is the light of the presence of Hashem that He put into creation. This light is the radiance that Moshe had on his face, and that came out from the Beis Hamikdash. On Chanukah, we are lighting a ner (candle) for ohr—not for a practical purpose, but rather as a testimony of the light of the presence of Hashem.
