A Kohen is not allowed to come in contact with a corpse, as its tumah (ritual impurity) is the antithesis of the work that the Kohen represents. A dead body is devoid of any spirituality, and returns to the dust while the soul ascends heavenward. The Kohen's job is always directed toward heaven, guiding the people to be able to serve Hashem properly. During the days of Sefiras Haomer, we work on this elevation and development, moving from a beheimah (animal) to the elevated, refined humans that we have the capacity to become. |
