In Parshas Shemos, we learn about the geulah (redemption) of the Jewish people after Hashem heard their cries. The aspects of teshuva (repentance) and Tefilah (prayer) are critical to redemption. There are two different types of prayer in this situation: crying from the pain and oppression, versus turning to Hashem and connecting to Him. Hashem will respond to our cries and our pain for the sake of His name, but it is not the same kind of prayer as one that builds connection and expresses relationship. We were taken out of Mitzrayim because Hashem heard our cries of pain, leading toward the ultimate connection and relationship when we would receive the Torah. When we cry out to Hashem from the pain of our golus (exile), we must be sensitive to the pain of our fellow Jews and care for them, just as Moshe did before he took the Jews out of Mitzrayim. |
