When we had the mishkan and did the avodah(service) with korbanos (offerings), the mizbeach (altar) was michaper (cleansed) our aveiros (sins). Nowadays, our table serves this purpose when we invite guests to join us. When a person offers a korban, they are elevating the physical, making it clear that they want every aspect of their lives to be directed to the service of Hashem. When a person is eating, they can simply indulge in physicality and forget about Hashem. However, if their table is full of words of Torah, and is open to poor people, they are elevating their table, achieving the same goal as korbanos offered in the Beis Hamikdash accomplished.
