Lecture Details: |
In Parshas Shoftim, we learn about two distinct models of authority over the Jewish people-the shoftim (judges) and melachim (kings). The shoftim are charged with enforcing and clarifying the Divine law, bringing the Torah to the people and applying it to daily life. The king maintains a more administrative role, working to uphold society. When Bnei Yisroel asked for a king like all of the other nations, they lacked understanding of the Divine element of governing society. On Rosh Hashana, we proclaim Hashem as our king, stating that we want to bring His involvement down to this earth, just as the shofitm did. |
