The Divine Gifts that Define (Me & You as) a Jew (Parshas Vayishlach)
Speaker:   Alter, Rabbi Avrohom M.
Series: Hashkafah -Thought
Lecture Details:  Who are we? Physically we are what we eat. Plus our inherited DNA. Spiritually things are not much different. As Jews we begin life with some very special divine gifts; gifts of potentially great character traits and attributes that have been transmitted genetically from our Patriarchs and Matriarchs, over thousands of years. And, just as physically we are what we eat, so too spiritually we are what we do! As Yaakov Avinu prepares to meet his vengeful brother Esav, coming with an army to kill Yaakov, the torah reveals to us Yaakov's state of mind and heart. "Yaakov was greatly afraid and distressed". Our sages explain: "afraid that he may be killed and distressed that he may be forced to kill another"! Astounding! Why, if Yaakov was permitted by Torah law to kill Esav in self defense, was he at all "distressed"? Additional points to ponder: Earlier, why didn't Rivkah simply reveal to Yitzchok that Esav was intent on killing Yaakov - instead of presenting a ruse to him that Yaakov must leave to find a wife (away from the Bnos Cheis)? Also, after Lavan tricked Yaakov (substituting Leah for Rachel) he allows him to marry Rachel by coercing a commitment that Yaakov will now work an additional 7 years after marrying her. Considering that Yaakov was scammed, why didnt he just get up and leave after marrying Rachel? After all he already worked the first 7 years for her hand in marriage?
