"Kristallnacht" - Where was Hashem? (Parshas Vayetze)
Speaker:   Alter, Rabbi Avrohom M.
Series: Hashkafah -Thought
Lecture Details:  It is a mind boggling question asked all the time, sometimes even from Torah observant Jews. There are some who give voice to this query, vocalizing their wonder out loud, while many more more silently whisper their confoundment deep in the recesses of their hearts and minds. In general, throughout life's many challenges, how does a Jew Hashkafikally deal with disappointments, or worse, tragedies of un-imaginable proportions? In our Parsha Rachel pleads with Yaakov to daven for her, so that she too may bear him children. Yaakov responds uncharacteristically with a sharp retort (seemingly oblivious to her pain) and in flaring anger! Was she not right to ask her husband to pray for her? Is this not the system Hakadosh Baruch Hu established in our world, whereby Teffilah opens the conduits to blessing? Why should she not ask a Tzadik (her husband) to intercede on her bealhf with Hashem? Does the Tzadik not have a closer relationship with Hashem insuring that his teffilos and merit will unlock the gates of mercy? Finally, earlier in the Parsha, Yaakov awakens from his prophetic sleep with a start, expressing that unbeknownst to him he was sleeping in the "House of Hashem", whereas had he known, he never would have consciously disrespected such a holy site. Yet, from the Pasuk it is apparent that he then continues to go right back to sleep... until morning!
