In this week’s potion, the Torah gives a long list of commandments that seem to relate to establishing a society. But why does it begin with slavery, murder and kidnapping? We would expect the Torah to begin on a more positive note, and with more common occurrences, rather than starting with the exceptions to the rule. By taking a closer look at the nature of the laws, and the order in which the Torah places them, this class offers insight into man’s unique potential and the nature of the relationship that was initiated during the revelation on Mt. Sinai.
