Hashem asked Klal Yisroel for Half Shekels as a means to count the Bnei Yisroel and to atone for their sin of the Golden Calf. But it is truly possible to buy our way out of sin and to achieve atonement? And even if so, shouldn't we then have given at least a whole shekel and not a half? Rashi brings the Midrash that Moshe had a philosophical difficulty comprehending this Mitzvah (Moshe wondered, "How can one ever give enough money to redeem himself?") until Hashem showed him a half shekel, made of fire, taken from underneath Hashem's kisay hakavod - Hashem's throne of glory.
We must ask.... How exactly did seeing this fiery coin answer Moshe's philosophical concerns? Why was it necessary for this coin to be made of fire and what was it doing hiding beneath the Kisay HaKavod?
What is the real message Hahsem was conveying to Moshe and ultimately to Klal Yisroel? |
