Lecture Details: |
It's the thought that counts" is well known conciliatory expression, commonly used to assuage the feelings of someone who had good intentions but unfortunately fell short of accomplishing their goal.
However, when one does in fact accomplish their task it would seem that their thoughts, whatever they might be, are irrelevant. Their goal was reached, their act of kindness or charity done. Thus, their thoughts should no longer make a difference.
But in Judaism it's not so!
A person's thoughts are infused into their actions and really do make a difference.
Thoughts create realities even in the physical world! Thoughts can render the most magnanimous act of chessed sterile! They can nullify the deepest expressions of prayer! Or they can enhance and empower a minor accomplishment to rise to highest places above!
