The event of Matan Torah at Har Sinai was not simply a way to give us the Torah; rather, we experienced the revelation of Hashem in a way that brought us back to the level of Adam in Gan Eden, who was able to see the presence of Hashem. At Har Sinai, Bnei Yisroel reached this level of seeing Hashem in a direct encounter, as opposed to the usual distance that is associated with only hearing, but not seeing. The dichotomy of shemiyah (hearing) and reiyah (seeing) is present in tefillah as well: when a person davens, he should understand that he is standing in front of the Shechinah (Divine Presence) and therefore must not look up; additionally, there is no need to shout to Hashem, whose is right in front of us. |
