In the second aliyah of Parshas Vayeishev, Yosef travels to Shechem to check on his brothers and ends up being sold. Shechem is a place that is notorious for trouble. The brothers are unwilling to accept the idea of Yosef ruling over them, and respond with force. Many years later, the kingship of Bnei Yisroel will split in Shechem, with a similar attitude of forcing. However, Yehuda does not have this quality of force, but rather tries to convince the brothers to sell Yosef instead. Yehuda's name means gratitude, and it is this characteristic that is an antidote to destructive pride. |
