In the second aliyah (section) of Parshas Tetzaveh, the choshen (breastplate) is described. This breastplate that the Kohen Gadol wore was attached to the ephod (apron), which had stones with the names of the Shevatim (tribes) on the shoulders. The ephod is mechaper (forgives) for the sin of idol worship, while the choshen serves as a mechaper for improper judgment amongst people. Aharon carried the names of the Shevatim on his shoulders and on his heart, symbolizing these two elements of hashraas Hashechinah(resting of Hashem's presence) and bringing together the Jewish people. |
