The fire of Hashem's presence can be a positive indication of the presence of Hashem, or it can be a fire that consumes. This duality is present when the mishkan is inaugurated: the fire of Hashem's presence burns the korbanos (sacrifices) that were offered, but soon after, consumes Nadav and Avihu. This same phenomenon is seen through a husband and wife--if they merit, the Shechinah will dwell among them, as in the mishkan, but if not, they will be left with the letters of aish (fire). Aish is the highest of the four elements, and has the ability to bring the other elements together. This is the goal of the mishkan: to bring down the presence of Hashem in order to fuse the Jewish people together. |
