In the third aliyah of Parshas Devarim, Moshe retells the story of the meraglim (spies). We cried for nothing on that night, claiming that Hashem hated us and was bringing us to a terrible land. Bnei Yisroel projected their own hate onto Hashem, who loves us and wants what is best for us. However, Bnei Yisroel could not tolerate being completely dependent on Hashem, and wanted to distance themselves from being so needy and reliant. Yet it is impossible to separate from dependence on Hashem-rather, any distance that we experience stems from our need to recognize and appreciate our connection with Him. |
