Getting in the Door: The Issues of Immigration
Speaker:   Fleisher, Rabbi Mordechai
Series: Torah For Tycoons
Lecture Details:  Congress recently issued a bi-partisan proposal for comprehensive immigration reform, while the President countered with his own plan. Immigration, especially of the illegal sort, has been on the front burner for quite some time, sparking a huge amount of debate in all segments of American society. As Jews living in the United States, largely descended from individuals who immigrated to this country during the last several generations, we are keenly aware of the problems posed by a closed-door policy. What is the Torah outlook on freely allowing immigrants into a country? Does the strain they may place on job availability or limited government funding for programs play a role? Do refugees or severely economically deprived individuals get priority? What if they have arrived illegally? What is the ethical imperative to assist immigrants in acclimating to their new society? Is it proper to employ illegal immigrants if there are laws prohibiting such dealings, and does the government’s turning a blind eye affect one’s responsibility to obey those laws? Find out about this contentious conundrum with Kenneth H. Stern, Partner, Stern & Curray LLC, and Rabbi Mordechai Fleisher, Director of Community Education for the Denver Community Kollel.
