The 7th aliyah of Parshas Vayikra moves from speaking about the Korban Chatas (sin offering), to the Korban Asham (guilt offering). The Ramban discusses what the difference is between these two korbanos. He explains that the Asham is for sins that are more serious than the Chatas. However, there is one type of Asham that seems to negate this: the Asham Talui. This Asham offering is brought when a person does not know if he actually committed a sin or not. It would seem then, that the korban he brings would not need to be a more expensive, more serious korban - he is not even sure if he sinned! The reason he brings this korban is because we want to ensure that he takes his avodas Hashem (servitude of G-d) seriously. He may rationalize that he did not actually do any sin, and therefore not improve himself. This conscientiousness of our fear of Heaven is something in which we can all strengthen ourselves. |
