The seventh aliyah (section) instructs the Jewish nation to be holy and separate from the other nations. Ideally, the world should be completely Shabbos, completely holy. However, in the world nowadays where there is holy and mundane, we need wisdom to be able to distinguish and separate between the two. The need to distinguish comes because there are places in the world where Hashem is clearly seen and there are places where Hashem is hidden. As the Jewish people, we distinguish ourselves by choosing that which Hashem told us is holy and separating from that which Hashem said is impure. However, the ultimate separation is accomplished not just through the havdala, the instructions that separate us, but also the kiddush, lifting ourselves up to be closer to Hashem. |
